DRIVE TO GANGTEY
Leaving Thimphu, the road winds and climbs up to Douchu La Pass (alt. 10,495 ft), the highest point on the journey, marked by the ubiquitous prayer flags and grand views of the Himalayas to the north. From here, the road spirals downward into the subtropical Punakha valley, characterised by bamboo jungles and orchards. The ascent begins shortly hereafter, through broadleaved and temperate forests to Gangtey (alt 9,480 ft).
Gangtey in the Black Mountains. Phobjikha is a high glacial valley and winter home to black-necked cranes. Here, the eight suites of Amankora Gangtey offer a serene welcome.
Spend one morning exploring Phobjika, one of the few high altitude glacial valleys in the regions, serene and beautiful, and one of Bhutan's greatest natural vistas. It is the winter home of the rare and sublime black-necked crane, one of the most endangered bird species. Phobjika is also the site of the Gangtey Gompa, the revered and only Nyigmapa Monastery in western Bhutan.
